Soul weary.
It’s different than being tired physically. It’s a weariness in the deepest part of you. In your heart and spirit.
Have you been there? I have.
When you feel that heaviness in your soul, it’s hard to find joy no matter where you look.
Being soul-weary means you care and you feel things deeply. With that though you can internalize things and it starts to weigh you down physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
How can you get peace back in your life?
Let’s talk first about what can deplete your soul and spirit and leave you just existing and not truly living.
What is making your soul weary?
There has been so much to deal with in the last couple of years and months, and it seems far from over. The world seems at times to be spinning out of control. Anger and hatred are showing up in what used to be safe places to work, do business, and worship. Safe places where we send our children to learn and grow.
We realize we have no control over any of it.
Over time you start to feel depressed and hopeless and anxiety is an everyday occurrence.
We weren’t made to live life like this.
Does this sound like you?
Are you watching too much news wanting to stay informed, but feeling increased anxiety and stress afterward?
Do you no longer have a routine of self-care for yourself physically, mentally, or spiritually?
You haven’t opened your Bible in quite a while and praying is something you’re no longer doing or have the energy for?
It’s time to reset your heart and mind
Sometimes boundaries are necessary for your health and well-being.
If you’re checking the news a lot and you feel anxious afterward or even hopeless, it’s time for a break. A constant stream of bad news is not good for the soul. Maybe check the news no more than a couple of times a day. Instead pray for situations, people, and our world. Having boundaries in this area will improve your mood, your thoughts, and your heart.
Don’t lose sight of good things that are still happening around you and in the world. God is still moving and He is with us.
Self-care is so important during times of soul weariness. It’s easy to neglect little things that can recharge and calm you.
Sometimes it’s just quieting yourself and breathing soul-cleansing breaths. Or it might be a cup of tea or stretching your body to feel more grounded. Maybe going to bed early and getting restorative sleep. Look at areas of your life and see where you have neglected yourself physically. Then make those areas a priority again so you can feel nurtured and cared for.
The most important care you can give your soul in weary times is to read God’s Word. It can revive a spirit that is just hanging on and breathe fresh life into it. Most importantly it will give you renewed hope, that God is still in control. There is still a plan for humanity, and His grace is for everyone.
Fill your heart and mind with what matters. Not what the world wants to tell you.
We are living in uncertain times. Evil seems to be winning most days. Let God speak to your soul and affirm that He sees, He knows and He cares. In the midst of all the chaos, He is the peace and our Rock. Let’s abide with Him through all the storms and heartbreaks of life so we can still put one foot in front of the other and still have hope for better days ahead.
Dwell with Him deeply and you will be able to say with a believing heart that “It is well with my soul”.
Until next time,
