I love body scrubs! Always have! I can remember being a teenager and using scrubs that smelled like every kind of fruit imaginable.
I don’t use very many fruity scrubs anymore but I always make the time to get my scrub in!
We will talk about dry brushing in a future post, and I love that as well, but the gritty stuff definitely has a major place in my body care.
Let’s talk about all the amazing benefits of body scrubs and why you should be using them!
Why scrub?
People usually use a scrub because they are seeing dry flaky skin on their body. Alligator skin, as my clients liked to tell me. Big obvious patches of dry skin. So they use a scrub and forget about it until the next time their skin is dry and itchy.
Working on clients, I could tell if someone took care of their facial skin very quickly. During the massage part of the treatment, I could tell right away if they were not body scrub users. Their skin felt clogged, bumpy, and dry. Rough patches everywhere. When I would ask if they ever used a body scrub they usually said no. Once we talked about the reasons why they should start, and they tried it, they were believers and always made it a part of their routine.
It makes that big of a difference!
Here is what you can expect from using body scrubs:
- Removal of dead skin build up – Dead skin can build up on the skin pretty quick. The cells are always turning over. Sure, showering removes some of it, but dead skin cells can be like glue on the skin. The skin never feels soft because your just moisturizing dead skin cells with body lotion! It takes some extra help in removing that build up. That’s where your scrub comes in!
- Unclogs your pores – That layer of dead skin will clog up the pores on your body, especially the backs of arms and back of legs. With regular use of scrubs, the skin will become super soft. I’m talking baby soft! Now when you moisturize you’re getting a deeper penetration of your lotion, which results in deeply hydrated skin.
- Firmer body skin – Yes!! You are stimulating those nerve endings in the skin, which will bring them closer to the surface. That results in a firmer look to your body skin!! Now that is some good news ladies!
- Pigmentation is lightened – All those spots on the chest and other areas will lighten, resulting in a healthier look!
- Helps with self-tanning – If you self tan, you want to exfoliate the body skin first. This will give you a more even smoother look when your color develops from the self-tanner.
- Stimulates lymph – I like to say that our lymph is our garbage dumper. It helps to cleanse our system through our skin with a detoxifying effect. Our body is an excretory organ, so anytime we can help the lymph along we are bringing health back to our body.
- Circulation is increased – Such a health benefit! You might turn pink when you start doing a body scrub. It’s a good thing! That increased pink is revving up circulation and energy in your skin. The more you scrub, the healthier your skin becomes!
- May reduce body skin cancers – Such as actinic keratosis, which are precancerous lesions.
Be careful – Body scrubs are meant for the body. Don’t use them on the face. Use a separate exfoliation product that is meant for facial skin.
What should you use and how often do you scrub?
You can use a body brush or loofah gloves. I like the gloves a lot because I can just throw them into the washer afterward. The brushes feel great, just rinse them well and let then air dry to keep bacteria away.
There are so many scrubs to choose from. I think it’s just a matter of preference! Just make sure the grain isn’t too big! It shouldn’t hurt your skin when using!
Do a scrub once a week! If I miss a week my skin knows it! I literally look forward to getting that scrub back in my routine!
I think you will love body scrubs as much as I do once you start using them regularly! Happy scrubbing!
Until next time,
