The eye area is usually one of the first areas to show signs of aging and is one of the top concerns for clients. Some of it can be hereditary, and lifestyle, but I’m a firm believer we can make some major improvements and bring some visible changes to this area.
Why is the eye area so different?
The eye area has the thinnest and has the most fragile skin than anywhere else on the face. There are virtually no oil glands, collagen or fat in this area. Over time the eye area thins out even more, which is why aging shows up here first. Because the skin is so thin the veins and blood vessels can be more visible resulting in dark circles and discoloration. This is a major concern for most clients.
Time in the sun can increase the pigmentation in this area resulting in a dark blotchy look under the eye area. Allergies, lack of water, rubbing and squinting can take its toll as well. This results in a tired, aged, dehydrated and stressed look to the eyes.
What can we do to get back some youthfulness?
Let’s keep it easy and talk about some proven techniques that you can start today and in no time see some nice results!
Lifestyle Changes: In Chinese face mapping there are 2 kidney points under the eyes. When you are not drinking enough water it can show up as a darkened area under the eye. Drink your water every day to help your eyes.
If you have allergies treat them. It will reduce the effects of red, itchy irritated eyes. Dry eyes can be a result of aging as well from allergy medicines. I have found that increasing your Omega 3’s works great to target dry eye concerns. Even my eye dr has said my own eye dryness has improved by doing this!
Sleep deprivation always shows up in the eyes. I will have a whole post on this in the future as lack of sleep is epidemic and it’s causing a lot of problems physically and mentally for people. Try to get more sleep whenever possible so your eyes look well rested.
A poor diet will not only show up in your face but your eyes as well. Increase your fruits and veggies and bring back brightness and a healthy look to your eyes. Start with a daily smoothie!
What you can start doing today?
Eye cream is a must! Twice a day, every day. Keeping this area hydrated and moisturized makes all the difference. There are so many eye creams out there now that are powerfully effective but still gentle for this fragile area. Look for ingredients like peptides, collagen, and caffeine which all target aging, puffiness, darkness, wrinkles, etc. There are lots of great choices for eye creams, and they don’t have to cost a fortune. You can find great selections at just about every store.
Wear sunglasses when you are out and even on cloudy days. They will not only protect your eyes but help you not to squint!
Take your Omega’s and know what your Vitamin D levels are. Both of these supplements are necessary for healthy eyes and blood vessels.
Remove your eye makeup thoroughly at night. Make-up that is left on overnight can result in clogs under the eyes and milia,( tiny white bumps) which can be difficult to remove in this fragile area.
Conceal! There are great concealers out there now that are multi-tasking which will target aging and conceal darkness. I love that! Concealers will also give you more even coloring in your eye area.
In the meantime keep on laughing, and loving and not cringing too much when you see those little lines around the eyes. You’re living life well and that’s to be celebrated! Keep smiling, and hydrate those eyes at the same time!
Until next time,
