When the seasons change, our skin will let us know that it’s time to adjust our skin care routine as well.
What we were doing in the summer doesn’t seem to be addressing the changes we can start experiencing when the weather outside changes. Our skin’s texture and moisture level are the first things we notice. Our skin is drier, dehydrated and lackluster, meaning we are losing our glow!
The first few months of fall we can go back and forth between air conditioning and heat in our homes. This is going to have a direct effect on our skin. Many skin issues are directly affected by temperature and humidity level changes.
In the summer, humidity increases the skin’s moisture level. We have more of our own natural oil to help keep our skin moist so we can use lighter products in the summer.
When the seasons change, the air becomes drier and the humidity levels drop causing our skin to become more flaky and dry.
Let’s look at a couple of ways we can tweak our skincare routine this fall season so our skin can still look healthy and vibrant, and be prepared for the changing temperatures.
Changes to make in your skin care products
Cleanser. If you were using a gel cleanser in the summer, you may start to feel your skin is way too dry feeling after you cleanse. Switch to a cream based or a hydrating foam cleanser. You will feel the difference after one cleansing!
Moisturizer. Go up a notch in your moisturizer. If you were using an oil-free moisturizer, look for one that has ingredients like humectants, emollients, and hyaluronic acid, which are all moisture binding. A hydrating SPF moisturizer works well also! Using a little heavier moisturizer will leave your skin feeling more comfortable longer and you will be protecting the barrier of your skin from the elements.
When you switch to gentler products that aren’t over-stripping your skin, you also decrease the chances of tiny cracks or tears in the skin from colder weather and wind.
Exfoliate. Make sure you still exfoliate your skin, but a little more gently now. It’s still really important to remove all those dead cells that make the skin dull. Also, fall is a great time to start repairing the skin from summer damage. Exfoliation plays a big role in the repair process during the colder months.
I’ll have more in a future post about repairing skin discoloration and pigmentation during the colder months!
Don’t forget internal hydration for beautiful skin on the outside
More fats. Eating more fats such as avocados, extra-virgin olive oil, nuts, and seeds will have a huge impact on your skin. Sugar takes the glow out of our skin while healthy fats bring the glow back.
Collagen powders. Add to your coffee, tea or smoothies. Collagen Powder is the newest and hottest ingredient to slow down the aging process in the skin. This simple add in can give you beautiful results in how your skin looks and feels. Simple, tasteless and easy to add for internal hydration to the body, skin, and joints.
Omega 3’s. You know I love my Omega 3’s! So many amazing benefits from supplementing with good quality fish oil. Not only will your body and brain health increase, but your skin will definitely reap the benefits as well with increased hydration and glow from within!
Facial Oils. Love, love facial oils! I use them all year long! A few drops of a facial oil such as argon, rose hip or one of the many that I see offered in skin care now, will take your skin to another level! Use about 3 drops under your moisturizer and it’s a game changer for your skin in how it looks and feels! Try it! You will love it and so will your skin!
Hope this gets you thinking about your skin care routine in a new way. With a few changes in your skin care products and foods, you will be ready to face the fall season temperatures with glowing and hydrated skin! Glow with the season!
Until next time,
