He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together. Colossians 1:17
God is holding it all together. What a comfort.
I need to hear that often, especially as this year has been filled with interruptions, detours, and unexpected events. It’s been a roller coaster ride in many ways, and it’s been hard. I would have been overwhelmed if I had known everything I had to go through beforehand.
I’m sure you can relate. When today doesn’t look like yesterday, and you ask yourself what in the world is going on.
And somehow, we endure.
We may not always feel it, but God is holding us together.
I love this verse because it shows who’s in control when life feels out of control. It says, “He is before all things.” Before the bad diagnosis? Before the unexpected expense? Before the broken relationship? He is saying He was there and is there now.
That settles my heart.
Then it says, “In Him all things hold together.” All things? My “all” can be pretty big at times!
All is complete—not bits and pieces. He is holding our problems together, our heartache, our anxiety, and whatever would weigh us down to keep us from having hope.
He is holding me together, and he’s holding you together—right now, every minute, every day.
He knows it all and is holding it all.
He knows that life can throw us a curveball and knock the wind out of us. That’s why we have this verse: to remind us that nothing surprises Him, and He knows what we will need to keep putting one foot in front of another and moving forward. So He prepares the way “before.”
He moves in people’s hearts to comfort or be generous towards us. He orchestrates timing that you can’t explain. The Holy Spirit speaks to our souls and gives us hope for the next day where there was no hope.
Life is unpredictable. You can experience mountain-top joy and deep valley sorrow all in one day.
I’ve had too many of those days recently, but this verse has been on repeat in my mind and heart throughout the day and in the quiet of the night. It has settled and grounded me with a peace only He can provide.
What can you do today with this verse?
Write it down. Pray it. Memorize it. It will change you and it will change your heart.
God has gone before you and all you are going through, and he will hold it all together, and He will hold YOU.
Let that be your comfort today.
Until next time,
~pat
